Newpark Montessori

Nursery School

Wandsworth

Our lovely quiet nursery in the Tonsleys is in a sympathetically converted and restored church, which has its own outdoor play area and unique “inside-outside” garden. The nursery is conveniently located very close to Wandsworth Town railway station and numerous buses pass us on Old York Road and East Hill.

  • Newpark Montessori Nursery School opened in 2014. The nursery has two spacious rooms on the ground floor: a dedicated area for our youngest children, and a beautifully equipped Montessori preschool classroom which open directly onto the front garden. Additionally, a unique inside-outside garden upstairs allow further opportunities for children to explore and learn in the fresh air.

  • Children progress through a series of specially designed materials that help them advance academically in areas such as literacy and numeracy as well as helping them to develop their independence, concentration and social skills. We firmly believe the Montessori Method provides all the appropriate challenges children need to prepare them for primary school and later life.

  • Our Infant Community classroom is a beautiful light open plan room with a wonderful marine aquarium full of tropical fish and corals to soothe and amaze our babies. The aquarium is double sided and can also be viewed from the nappy changing area, so children can enjoy the colourful fish when being changed.

There is a large area for creative activities including drawing, craft, painting, sand and water play and other wonderfully messy activities! This area also doubles as our dining area. Other areas of the main room include a home corner for role play supporting language and social development, a book corner, a quiet area for babies to sleep, bottle feed and enjoy heuristic play, a Montessori practical life area, a problem solving area for children to explore science and early numeracy, a place for construction and a large ramp and stair for whole body physical development.

Our philosophy encourages our educators to interact with babies and children at their level and to promote children’s independence, so all play, activities and eating take place at specially designed low tables and chairs, or on floor mats.

Children move on to the lovely Montessori preschool classroom when they are ready to work with more advanced Montessori materials. This wonderful learning space offers a rich, broad curriculum incorporating Practical Life, Sensorial, Maths, Language, Culture, Science, Geography, Botany and Art. Children enjoy direct free-flow access to our front garden throughout the day and all year round; the children also use this area to grow their own seeds and bulbs.

The children’s bathroom is fitted with four WCs and wash basins, all at low level for young children’s use. Children are encouraged to observe high standards of personal hygiene by washing their hands before and after meals, after using the toilet or potties and by cleaning their teeth during the day.

In the kitchen our chef prepares all the babies’ and children’s meals from scratch on-site every day.

  • Our garden to the front provides a safe and versatile environment for a variety of outdoor activities that enrich our children's learning and development. It is easily accessed from the infant community and directly accessible from the school class.

On the first floor, we have created a room with six large windows which are open all year around giving the outside breezes and fresh air to an otherwise internal room. When chilly, the children are dressed appropriately. This area is designed, and wall murals are painted, to give the impression of a Town Square surrounded by beautiful houses with their garden balconies arrayed with beautiful flowers. A truly unique place for the children to play within.

A short distance away is Wandsworth Common and the Thames riverside walks – perfect outdoor locations for escorted excursions.

We are proud to have be one of only 365 nurseries in Greater London to have been awarded Bronze level for this award.
